The cost of college tuition has increased consistently over the past decade. In a study from the National Center of Education Statistics, the average cost of tuition from 1997 to 2008 for public institutions increased by 30% and the average cost for private institutions increased by 23%.
The most recent study from 2008 estimated the annual tuition cost for public colleges to be $11,578 and private colleges at $29,915.
